AU history | Sakutaro Morishige (who will be called "Shige" for the duration of this section) is a first-generation American immigrant. His parents moved to the United States as newlyweds and had him shortly after. His father struck up a very well-respected medical practice, and once she'd given birth to what would be her only child, his mother became very involved in the community they put down roots in. While officially she was a home-maker, she was also head of the neighborhood association, and volunteered with many women's organizations. With money to spare and all the affluence that a Japanese family can have in 1920's America, both his mother and his father had high hopes for his future.

Unfortunately, he hasn't been able to take advantage of the opportunities in this shining new country due to his weak constitution. He spent most of his childhood bedridden when not in the hospital, and as a result, didn't get the socialization most children do when they're young and starting school or playing with their friends at the park or out in the streets. It left him awkward and unable to communicate with other children his age, something that would become a much bigger problem later in life. After a couple of years living in the Adirondaks for the cleaner air offered there, his health improved, and he was finally able to begin attending school at age 13, having been instructed by his mother and private tutors up to that point.

Shige was a bright child, but being able to set his own pace at lessons up to this point left him feeling bored and unchallenged at his new school. His attitude was one of general chilliness, and it made his teachers and classmates alike assume he was a snob. This made it difficult for him to make friends, and he mostly kept to himself, reading books or collections of plays from the school library. It continued on like this until he turned 15 and met a fellow Japanese-American, Mayu Suzumoto. The friendship was successful largely in part to Mayu's stubborn persistence and the fact that they were the only to Asian students at their school (her father was also a doctor). The two quickly bonded over their love for theater, but he still struggled to connect with others at his school.

As he entered high school, it started to become more and more apparent that he didn't just suffer from a strong case of social ineptitude. He started displaying a strong interest in the macabre, and could be seen poking at dead birds or animals on the side of the road to try and look at their bone structure or internal organs. After asking his father if it would be possible for him to go to work with him sometime to see the bodies in the morgue, his parents started getting quite uncomfortable and nervous around their son. Was it some shortcomming of theirs that made him like this, or the isolation of his childhood? Either way, they didn't like what was happening, and the Suzumoto family was hearing far too much about this from their eldest daughter Mayu.

Ultimately, the decision was made to send him away to Clarion Prep, a wonderful school far enough away from home that no one would know about his preoccupations, giving him a chance to start over and "straighten out" (as his father put it). Neither he nor Mayu were particularly amicable to this idea, but were left with little choice but to agree; when they parted ways, they promised to write each other every week, and she gave him a gift that he'd been wanting for a long time but his parents thought was far too frivolous for a boy like him; a Kodak Brownie camera.

personality | Shige is a bit of an odd duck. Being so sickly as a child means he grew up rather isolated from others, and his parents weren't exactly there for him beyond making sure he was eating and taking his medicine. It's left him lonely and starved for human contact, but he isn't sure how to ask for it or obtain it. Instead, he opts to remain alone by choice in his teenage years, taking solace in solitude instead of putting himself out there and risking being let down.

He comes off as rather cold, since he was never given much reason to express his emotions outwardly growing up (there was no one there to express them to, so he internalizes everything like crazy). People think he's snobby or disinterested, which is just another reason for him to stay isolated rather than try and seek contact. But truthfully, he just wants friends who understand him, something he's only found thus far in Mayu Suzumoto. Just like he choses solitude over the risk of rejection, he doesn't correct the assumptions about his personality because truthfully, he's not sure how he'd act around people even if he stopped being frigid.

Shige has a deep interest in things dark and macabre, reading coroner reports from his father's study when he isn't home and studying anatomy books for a better understanding of the human body. He has an interest in dead things, and can often be found studying dead birds or animals that he stumbles across. If he thought he could get away with it, he'd probably take them home to dissect, but the family's housekeepers would rat him out in a second.

This interest stems from a deep curiosity to understand how things work, and he finds beauty in the inner workings of living beings, particularly humans. The incredible taboo around death and blood intrigues him, and he doesn't really understand why it's so bad that he's interested in corpses. It's an aesthetic and scientific interest, one that would never lead him to do anything illegal or morally wrong, but that doesn't keep others from worrying or being scared.

His more "normal" interests are theater, and he has a great passion for acting. Being on stage is the only way he can really express himself, and he can pull upon his many internalized emotions to really bring his scenes to life. He also loves to read, and has a budding adoration of photography that he plans to explore vigorously at Clarion Prep.

SAMPLES

sample 1 | Cold weather has never sat well with Shige; it always seems to leak into his muscles all the way down to the bone. The seasons have only just started to change, and he already finds himself thinking wistfully of the warm embrace of summer; he loathes the thick wool socks he has to put on before he even gets out of bed, and he pulls a sweater on over his shirt to combat the chill. His fingers feel numb and clumsy, but he still manages to pick his camera up from his bedside table with the most delicate care, the weight comforting and familiar and making him feel just a bit warmer.

Leaving the dormitories, he doesn't have to go far to reach his destination. Under a bush, diagonal from the window of his bedroom, is a small mouse that had curled up and died about a week ago. Every day, without fail, he's been coming out to observe the decomposition process. The creature is so small and delicate, it seems like the slightest breath of wind would blow it away. Yet, here it remains, and he crouches down, setting his camera aside as he brushes leaves from the tiny body.

The fur is matted and glistening with what appears to be melted frost, and Shige wonders if the cold snap has slowed down the process; he knows that bodies in the morgue are kept very, very cold to keep them from rotting, and it appears that the same thing has happened naturally here. The mouse looks much the same as it did when he first found it, curled in a tight little ball with just the tip of it's nose poking out. He'll have to wait for his film to develop to really be sure, but it fascinates him that death seems to have left the creature in a state of sleep, as if it would get up and run away as soon as the frost melts.

Pushing his glasses up on his nose, he picks the camera back up, shifting restlessly to make sure that the angle is exactly the same as the previous seven pictures he's taken. Just a couple more and he'll have a full roll, ready to be sent off and developed. Thin, pale lips curl into a smile, and he presses the shutter.
